GB Railfreight (GBRf) has today published its 2026 Sustainability Report (link here), highlighting the measurable environmental and social benefits it delivers and setting out how further innovation will accelerate progress.

Rail freight is already one of the most sustainable ways to move goods across the UK, producing around 76 per cent fewer carbon emissions than equivalent road transport and removing millions of lorry journeys from the road network each year. This delivers significant benefits not only in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but also in lowering congestion, improving air quality and enhancing safety.

Against this backdrop, GBRf continues to drive further improvements across its operations. The 2026 Sustainability Report outlines progress in reducing emissions, increasing resource efficiency and strengthening environmental performance across its network.

Key areas of focus include continued investment in modern, efficient rolling stock, programmes to enhance biodiversity across operational sites, improved recycling rates and a strong emphasis on employee wellbeing. The report also highlights GBRf becoming the first freight operator to adopt the Rail Safety and Standards Board’s (RSSB) Rail Social Value Tool, reinforcing its commitment to delivering positive social impact alongside environmental progress.

Looking ahead, GBRf is focused on accelerating the benefits rail freight can deliver. The introduction of its new Class 99 locomotives, due to enter service shortly, will mark a step change in capability. Combining electric and low-emission bi-mode technology, these locomotives will enable more freight to be moved on electric power, significantly reducing carbon emissions while increasing capacity and operational flexibility.

This next generation of traction will play a key role in helping to decarbonise freight transport in the UK and further strengthen rail’s position as the backbone of a more sustainable logistics network.
