Marc Dickson

Business Implementation Manager

"I’m responsible for bringing everything together to start up a new train. Typically a day consists of leading Teams meetings for ongoing new business projects. During those I need to obtain all relevant information ahead of a new service commencing, specifically any risks to the business and risk to the flow not commencing when it has been agreed to. I enjoy collaborating with people, the complexities that come with implementing new business and having deadlines to meet."

Any career advice?

Don’t take school for granted.

School

I enjoyed school for the social aspect but I never really gave it my all as my heart was set on joining the military. My favourite subject was PE as I was an avid running fanatic and loved playing football. I was part of the athletics and football teams.

Into work

I served in the Royal Marines for 9 years straight from school. When I left I joined GBRf, first as a Team Leader managing train services at a steel works, then moved to work in the Control in Peterborough. I went back trackside as a Rail Operator before starting my current role in 2020.

Training and qualifications

I got my GCSE Maths and English in the military as I left school without those. I’m now half way through a 3 year Degree, studying Professional Management which GBRf have very kindly sponsored. I do this alongside my job.

Outside of work

Spending time with my family, my 2 young sons are mad on football and I coach one of their teams, which is very hard work but also very rewarding. I also go and watch a lot of football home and away following Middlesbrough FC.
