Meet Luke, our Communications Apprentice
Q. Why and how did you join GBRf?
A. Upon leaving sixth-form college I pursued an apprenticeship in Social Media and Digital Marketing. Having studied Media at A-level, I was attracted to a career which involved crossing over some of the skills acquired whilst completing the subject. When I first saw the ‘Communications Apprenticeship’ role vacancy at GB Railfreight, I was amazed by the different responsibilities on offer. Unlike, previous roles I applied for, my current role offers a mixture of interesting areas: such as PR, Social Media and Events. Therefore, when I received a call to inform me I had an interview, in London Liverpool Street, I was delighted and even more so when I was offered the job.
Q. What attracted you to the business and what do you like about GB now?
A. Having joined the company with no prior work experience in the railway, I thought I may struggle integrating into my role. However, the longer I have spent at the company, the more I have come to realise the diversity within the railway. By gaining insight into different departments inside the company, from the likes of Business Development to Planning, it has shown me how much goes into a train getting from A to B. Every department plays their role in the business running coherently and this is a big reason as to why I like this company so much. At GBRf, doors are always kept open and people are continuously willing to support you if you need the help.
Q. What opportunities and exposure have you had since you joined?
A. Since I’ve joined the company I have had the privilege to embark on and enjoy many opportunities.
Recently, I attended a cab ride from Felixstowe to London, Stratford. The day started in our Felixstowe office where I was able to witness operations and meet staff based there. Once we made our way to the loco we would be travelling in, we also had the opportunity to gaze at the vast size of the port. The cab ride was amazing, and it was great to gain the perspective of our Train Managers and ask them questions about their occupation. Other worthy experiences I have attended are the Rail Business awards, which was amazing to celebrate the company’s success, as well as Multimodal Exhibition. Both were completely different, however unlike anything I’ve been involved in prior to working at GB.
Q. Explain your current role.
A. My role as ‘Communications Apprentice’ is very varied, however I like to categorise my responsibilities under Internal/External communications. Currently, I complete more responsibilities under Internal communications, such as uploading content to our internal app, monitoring the communications and information email address, compile concise letters, emails and documents, general office reception duties, help arrange staff socials and assist with our biquarterly staff magazine. In terms of external communication responsibilities, I maintain our social medias and help gather information to appear in external outlets.
Q. What training and development have been given?
A. As an apprentice I am studying towards a Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Business and Administration, whilst fulfilling my day-to-day job responsibilities. The course is applicable to the duties performed within my role and is pivotal to my developing new and existing skills to achieve my job objectives. Having recently embarked on the course I have been educated in a variety of skills and will be able to reap the full benefit of the qualification once I have successfully completed my studies. Besides my apprenticeship, GB Railfreight also offer a variety of training courses for different job roles, and to be able to receive a wide range of support reinforces how keen the company are for you to develop professionally and personally.
