Terminal Operations

GBRf works in partnership with its customers to provide rail movements and assist in future planning and all rail logistics matters. The GBRf Terminal Operations team provide an embedded on-site service for our clients where it matters for them.


On rail, GBRf move 10,000 tonnes of both molten iron to the steel works and finished steel to the docks per day. The GBRf operation at Teesside employs 55 people, 45 directly with GBRf and a further 10 subcontractors who look after the wagon and locomotive maintenance.

GBRf also deliver materials by rail into the steelworks from Shap in Cumbria and Thrislington in County Durham and further utilize our on site capabilities to do the internal shunts.

CASE STUDY SSI

GBRf operates a 24/7/365 service for Sahaviriya Steel Industries (SSI UK) at their iron and steel-making facility on Teesside. The 10-year contract provides a service involving the daily transportation of 10,000 tonnes of molten iron from the blast furnace to the steel plant and delivering the finished steel slabs to the dock for export.

As part of the Agreement GBRf lease and maintain 10 x Di8 Vossloh locomotives which operate an average of 70 train moves per day.

GBRf also maintain the fleet of 76 BDA Type wagons which are used to transport the steel slabs ‘inter-bay’ and to the dock at Teesport.

The rail operation at Teesside employs 52 people, 42directly with GBRf, and a further 10 subcontractors who deal with the wagon and locomotive maintenance.

SSI and GBRf work together as a partnership to constantly review such things as cost management, asset utilisation and future developments.
