Biomass

GB Railfreight is one of only two freight companies that continuously move biomass on the railway, having moved two and a half million tonnes in the last 12 months. Unique to the market, we are the only freight company that delivers biomass by rail to power station generators.

GB Railfreight has a specialist team and fleet to transport biomass. Because of its diverse nature there is more than one way to move biomass: hopper wagons with special biomass covers, box wagons, containers or tanks. We have all of these wagons and they deliver a variety of biomass daily from ports to power stations.

Over three years we have built up our team and resources, and have contracts with Drax power station in Selby and E.ONs power station in Ironbridge. As part of our work with E.ON, we shift 1.5 million tonnes of biomass per year between Liverpool Docks and the Ironbridge Power Station. As part of our contract with Drax, we move 1.5 million tonnes of biomass from the Port of Tyne to Drax power station in Selby.
